and free. You can add a business description, photos, video, coupons
and more. When potential customers preform a Google business search
for local business information they'll find your business listing
organically and sometimes on the first page of Google Maps. This
websites goal is to share with you this free advertising opportunity.
We'll help you claim your Google Places business profile guiding you
through the process. It's free to claim your Yahoo Local and Bing
Local business profiles as well. Most business owners don't know
about these profiles and you don't need a website to be listed. New
business owners can also add your listings for free. If you need
assistance, contact us, we are more than happy to help.
Every so called SEO “Search Engine
Optimization” guru will tell you this is one of the first off page
SEO steps for better placement in local search results and
higher SERP's “Search Engine Results Pages” for your website. We'll help you optimize your
Google profile performance for local search results as well.
So let's get
started!
Established business's will probably
already have a Google listing that needs to be verified. New business owners
will have to add a listing. We'll go to Google Maps and type your
business name, address and State in the search bar to find out if your business
is listed. This is an important step. If your business is listed you don't
want to create multiple listings. Google may consider this spamming.
If you find more than one listing you should delete the ones with the
least amount of aggregated data. If you don't find your business listed go to the next step. Add a New Business.
If you find your business is listed, click on the "more info" text to the right of the listing. That will take you to your business profile page.

From here we can see all of the
information Google has aggregated about your business from online
directories and review websites. Don't freak out if the information is incorrect. We are going to make the corrections and add quality
content. It's possible for some slime ball competitor to hijack your profile by clicking on the "Edit this place" link. If your profile shows that it's an "Owner-verified listing" and you or an employee did not verify the listing we can fix that. Go to Google Places help for business owners that did not verify their listing. Please see below.
Let's move on and click on the "Business owner?" link. Choose "Edit my business information" and click continue. See Adding Quality Content below.

Add a New Business
New business owners will have to create
an account. Go to Google Places and click on the “Create an account now” button at the bottom right corner of your screen or existing Google users can sign in with your account. If you decide to get a Gmail account
try to choose an email address that matches your business name.
“YourBusinessName@gmail.com” This will come in handy when you
submit your website to search engines and business directories as you
receive a lot of spam or junk emails.Your Google account will also give you access to Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics.

Adding quality content
Quality content is perhaps the most
important factor when considering profile performance, page rank, and
conversions. This is true no matter what the media platform is.
Complete ALL of the profile fields including hours of operation and
payment methods. If you have a website, make sure that the
information in your profile matches your website.
Your description should provide
information that demonstrates authority, longevity, credibility,
including warranties, guarantees and a call to action statement. Be
sure to add your keywords to your description. Don't over do it or
you will get dinged. Use keywords to reinforce your theme and not
over saturate by stuffing.
Your listing title should match your
business name. It's tempting to add keywords and you may see some
temporary results, but you will probably get dinged for it.
Choose
your categories wisely and create custom categories in addition to
the ones provided. They should be closely related to the products or
services you offer.
Use custom fields to list the services,
products, areas served and other details about your business. If your
a service based business then you will obviously cover more ground.
Location based business's should try to stay close to home. I know
that I would not travel 40 miles for a hair cut.
Add a coupon. Everybody knows we are all having tough times in this
economy. Coupons are back in a big way and projected to become even
more popular.
Encourage your customers to review your
business. This is always helpful for your profiles, directory
listings and website.
Add some photos. Why not? Everyone likes
to look at them, especially if your selling products like jewelry or
the best burrito in town.
Add a video. Search
engines visit video sites every few minutes, so your video appears in
Google,Yahoo and Bing in just minutes after you submit, not days or
weeks. Because they are so popular, video links and clips show up
before other content.
Verification options
You will have three verification
options.
1. By Phone
2. By SMS
3. By
Postcard
I find that the easiest and fastest way to verify your listing is by phone. When
you choose this option, Google's automated system will call the phone
number listed in the profile and give you a PIN number. Be ready
because it happens fast. Just type in the PIN number and submit.
